I guess it was only a matter of time, but in the back of my mind I was kind of hoping mine would run the distance. Everyone I know that has an Xbox 360 has had to return it due to the infamous “3 Red Lights” failure; but not me, mine lasted almost three full years. :) But it finally bit the dust the other night when I was wanting to play a little.

So I made the call to Microsoft, and as expected they asked me for the serial number of my Xbox. As I was reading it off over the phone I noticed the manufacture date of mine was actually November 2005! Probably not very exciting to most of you, but if you own a 360 you probably know that they extended the warranty of most units from one year to three years to try to alleviate the outcry about so many broken 360s. Whew, I just barely made it. I guess I should consider myself lucky that it broke now, and not six months from now.

A few minutes later I was told I’d receive a UPS label and then I could drop it off at any UPS Store and expect it back in two to three weeks. Overall it has been a relatively painless process so far for me, but I’ve heard some pretty bad horror stories (sorry Autstin), so I’ll keep my fingers crossed until I receive my new Xbox 360.

Curse you Microsoft.

I want a Nintendo Wii. I’ve wanted one since the day it was announced. I’ve looked at every store that carries that sort of thing everytime I’ve been in one. I admit, I haven’t put forth a ton of effort into getting one; but my wife can attest to the fact that its nearly impossible even if you do try (she tried to get me one for Christmas, but no luck).

But the simple fact is, the Wii has been out for about a year and half. No product, ever, should be unavailable a year and a half after its release. Sure, the Wii is selling well, but it isn’t selling well enough to warrant that. I should be able to walk in to any Walmart, Target, Best Buy, GameStop, whatever, and pick one up at any time. I was going to post production numbers and sales numbers and come up with an argument about why they should have more in stores than they do, but after looking into it, the data just didn’t seem very reliable. So I’m just going to make the claim that there is no excuse for product shortages two Christmas’s in a row. I don’t think any product has even had that happen before.

So that’s it Nintendo. After looking at the empty shelf for nearly 18 months (we get groceries once a week, and while I don’t go everytime, I’d say between grocery trips, the mall, and random outings I’ve looked at least once a week; so that makes 72 disappointments), I’m throwing in the towel. Even if by some miracle I happen to see one, I won’t be buying it. I’ll just be comforted by the fact that my Xbox 360 will welcome me at anytime.
