Xavier has recently started watching a cartoon on Disney XD called X-men: Evolution. I remember watching the X-men cartoon when I was little and absolutely loving it, so now I’m re-living those memories through Xavier We will literally sit on the couch together and watch the whole thing (to be honest I think I pay more attention that Xavier, but he really does like it).

He even recognized that one of the characters had the same name as him. It was hilarious, one of the characters said “Where’s Professor Xavier,” and Xavier started cracking up and said “He said my name!” So yes, my son likes X-men, my job as a parent is complete.

Wow, what a crazy past 24 hours it has been. First, Meg and I were awakened at around 3:00am to the sound of insanely loud howling winds, and lightning flashes that made it look like the sun was shining in our bedroom. Shortly thereafter, we lost power and the battery-backup baby monitors started going crazy (they feel it necessary to alert you very loudly when they are not functioning correctly).

Somehow in my drowsy haze I remembered that alarm clocks don’t work without electricity, and I set the trusty mobile phone alarm. We peeked out the windows a few times, just enough to realize we were probably in the middle of one of the worst storms either of us had ever been in. Then we promptly fell back asleep .

My phone woke me a couple of hours later, only to find that we were still without power. So I had the luxury of showering and dressing with a flash light (don’t even ask how that works), then I headed off to work. Unfortunately for Megan, when she woke up their still wasn’t any power, and since the kids need to eat, and their food is usually something that needs to be cooked, she had to take the kids out of the house pretty much all day.

Finally I got home from work at around 5:00pm, fully thinking that surely the power would be back on by then. But no. Still nothing. So Meg and I packed the kids up again and headed over to Steve and Kelsey’s for dinner, hoping that we would have electricity again before all of our food spoiled. Lo and behold, when we came home we were greeted by a neighborhood full of bright shining lights .

Now I realize this post just shows how completely dependent we are on electricity and all of our gizmos these days; but come on, at least the pilgrims were prepared for and had always lived in the dark sad world without electricity .

Ok. Word of warning to anyone with little kids, or anyone planning on having little kids in the future.

When applying Orajel (or any other topical gum-number) to the little ones’ gums, never, ever, lick the excess stickiness off of your fingers…

I’m not kidding. That stuff is powerful and works immediately. And it isn’t like the Novocaine numbness you’re used to from the dentist, this is sort of a partial numbness. You can feel just enough to be driven crazy by it.

So, after you’ve gone and tried it (I know you will), come back and tell me what you think of that stuff.

I think God is trying to teach me patience. He’s certainly seeing to it that I wait to hear about the job I recently interviewed for. I interviewed nearly two weeks ago. And since then, I’ve talked to the hiring manager once, when she told me that she would try to have an answer for me by this Wednesday.

If I could pace and type at the same time, I would.

I’ve dreamed about this job. I’ve prayed about it. I want it so badly.

But, I know that no matter how badly I want it, if God doesn’t want it for me, then I won’t get it. And I think I’m okay with that. Pastor’s sermon on Sunday might as well have been him sitting me down for a nice, long chat. In a nut shell, he told everyone that God will open doors where He wants them open, and He’ll close the ones that need to be shut. In short, God will show us, if we’re willing to pay attention, what direction He wants us to move in. So, I’m trying to faithfully wait. Right now, I feel like I’m standing in a hallway full of doors, and all of them are shut. I’m just waiting for God to open one for me.

So, if you’re reading this, please keep me in your prayers. Pray that God will provide me with a good, full time job. One that lets me use my degree. …And if you would, pray that He’ll open a door, and that He’ll be very obvious about it, because I don’t want to miss my opportunity.

Thanks.

Xavier requested his first fist pound today! He has been able to return a fist pound for awhile now; if I held out my fist and said “Fist pound” then he would run up and do it. Since he was able to do that, I would usually tell him to after he did something good or funny. But today marks the first day he actually held out his fist for one. Xavier and Ali were playing in the floor of the bedroom while I was paying some bills, and Xavier was taking a bunch of band-aids out of their container while Ali sat watching in amazement. So after I noticed all the band-aids littering the floor, I convinced Xavier that it was just as fun to put them all back . After a few minutes, he was finished picking them all up and he ran up to me holding the box with a big smile on his face. After I said “Good job!” to him, he held out his little fist. It was priceless.

In other news, I’m working on getting pictures up from Christmas, but I think I’m going to wait until I get the DVD from Mom with the pictures that she took. stay tuned.

My kids are adorable, and I love them both very much… I just wanted to clarify that before I start this entry, because it’s pretty much going to focus on the one and only Xave-o. Ali is sweet and special and I love her to no end, but let’s be real here… She can only do like seven things: eat, sleep, poop, pee, cry, fart, and (occasionally) smile. She does them all well and she looks cute doing them, but let’s face it, an entry about her pooping and crying wouldn’t be that entertaining.

Anyway, Xavier got a new pair of shoes yesterday. Since he’s walking all over the place now, I decided he has to start wearing shoes. For most parents, the decision to make their kids start wearing something on their feet isn’t a huge ordeal — however, I am married to a man who wears flip-flops or goes bare-footed 360 days a year. This aversion to shoes has rubbed off on Xavier over the past year, and Xave-o now believes his Flintstone-feet are super-human and do not need to be protected by shoes.

I searched all over the mall yesterday to find shoes that I thought would comfortably fit Xave’s massive size five feet. I looked for Etnies (why, because they’re skater shoes; they’re the widest things I could think of). All the Etnies, even the white ones that looked a little girly were sold out in a size five. I tried Vans, Adidias and Puma. No size fives. So finally I caved in and bought the stupidly expensive (and very narrow) Nike Shox, praying that they would fit.

Now, given Xavier’s reaction, one would think I purchased blocks of wood with rusty nails sticking up through them and strapped them onto Xavier’s feet. He kicked. He screamed. He kicked some more. He tried violently to remove the shoes. Finally (after tourturing my ears for about half an hour), he gave in a decided to try walking. Success! Little man cruised all around the house in his new kicks, seeming to forget they were there. He walked up to me, grinning, wanting to be picked up, and I happily obliged. He was wearing shoes, woo-hoo!

I celebrated too early.

The second I picked Xave up, he looked at me, grabbed two fist-fulls of my hair and kicked my belly, screaming the whole time. I nearly dropped him, but instead, sat him on the ground while trying to get his grubby little fingers untangled from my curls. Somehow, during our tango, he managed to kick off both of his shoes. …And the crying stopped.

Huh.

Stupid shoes.

PS… Xave is scared of grasshoppers. I took the kids on a walk last night, and a grasshopper popped up right in Xavier’s face and he squealed. Honestly, I’ve never heard such a high-pitched sound ever before. I would have died laughing, except that Xave was actually scared of the bug and needed a big hug before I could continue pushing him home.

Here are some new pictures of Xavey being rotten and playing in his new shoes.

So this will definitely be the most pointless post I probably ever make, but I had to share this with the world. I was picking up stuff off the bathroom counter the other day and there was a little plastic soap try that came in the packaging of a bar of soap. The soap tray had the brand of the soap and ingredients on it. As I was glancing through the ingredients (I have this weird obsessive compulsive thing where I have to read that kind of stuff if I look at it), I noticed the longest word I’ve ever seen.

Methylchloroisothiazolinone

Yeah, it took me about 5 minutes before I could pronounce it without looking… So is it really necessary that scientist name things that way?
