Sweet Sweet Electricity

Wow, what a crazy past 24 hours it has been. First, Meg and I were awakened at around 3:00am to the sound of insanely loud howling winds, and lightning flashes that made it look like the sun was shining in our bedroom. Shortly thereafter, we lost power and the battery-backup baby monitors started going crazy (they feel it necessary to alert you very loudly when they are not functioning correctly).
Somehow in my drowsy haze I remembered that alarm clocks don’t work without electricity, and I set the trusty mobile phone alarm. We peeked out the windows a few times, just enough to realize we were probably in the middle of one of the worst storms either of us had ever been in. Then we promptly fell back asleep
.
My phone woke me a couple of hours later, only to find that we were still without power. So I had the luxury of showering and dressing with a flash light (don’t even ask how that works), then I headed off to work. Unfortunately for Megan, when she woke up their still wasn’t any power, and since the kids need to eat, and their food is usually something that needs to be cooked, she had to take the kids out of the house pretty much all day.
Finally I got home from work at around 5:00pm, fully thinking that surely the power would be back on by then. But no. Still nothing. So Meg and I packed the kids up again and headed over to Steve and Kelsey’s for dinner, hoping that we would have electricity again before all of our food spoiled. Lo and behold, when we came home we were greeted by a neighborhood full of bright shining lights
.
Now I realize this post just shows how completely dependent we are on electricity and all of our gizmos these days; but come on, at least the pilgrims were prepared for and had always lived in the dark sad world without electricity
