WordPress 2.5

Success! I just upgraded joshandmeg.net to WordPress 2.5 (Release Candidate 1). Overall it was a pretty painless upgrade. I accidentally deleted my wp-config.php file during the process, so I had to hunt down my database data to fill in a new one. Other than that though, I didn’t have any problems. All my plugins still work as well, with the exception of my admin menu plugins (more on that in a minute).
From a reader’s perspective, nothing new will really be noticed, but if you use WordPress to do any blogging, then you will definitely want to check out the completely re-done admin interface. I must say, I was never a big fan of the original admin interface to begin with, and I had found a few plugins (Admin Drop Down Menus and ClickTags) to make things a bit nicer. With WP 2.5, everything has been reorganized and visually updated (of course those plugins required some updates to work with the new structure, and thankfully the plugin author was on top of releasing those).
After playing around in the new interface for awhile, and writing this post, I have to say I really like it. I read some preliminary reviews of WP 2.5 in the past couple of weeks, and a majority of them were somewhat negative to the new interface. I’m really not sure why, as I can’t find too much about it that isn’t better than before; maybe they just don’t like change. There would be a screenshot below of me writing this post, but unfortunately the one problem I could find was with the new file upload screen. They changed the way media is handled quite a bit, and for some reason when I upload a file it pretends to do something, but it isn’t actually uploading the picture. Oh well, you really need to experience it for yourself anyway, and hopefully that bug will be fixed before the release
.
When the official WordPress 2.5 is released to the public, tentatively March 24th, I will upgrade the blogs hosted here. So, if you have some reason you don’t want me to upgrade your blog, just leave a comment below and I’ll leave it be.
